But while pigmentation is common, the right treatment approach is highly personal — and, in many cases, misunderstood.

This guide breaks down what pigmentation actually is, why it happens, and how I safely and effectively treat it in my clinic using a blend of medical-grade skincare, prescription formulations, and carefully selected in-clinic treatments.

Understanding the Different Types of Facial Pigmentation

Different pigmentation types require different treatment strategies, which is why diagnosis is the first and most important step.

1. Melasma

Melasma is a chronic form of pigmentation commonly triggered by hormones, heat, and UV exposure.  I often explain to patients that melasma is a long-term condition — something we manage, not “cure” — and it can sit in the epidermis or deeper in the dermis. This helps me understand how responsive it will be to treatment.

2. Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH)

This is extremely common in my Birmingham patient base, especially those with darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick skin types 4 -6).  It usually follows acne, eczema, or irritation from products, and many of my consultations begin with removing the harsh skincare that has been unknowingly worsening the pigmentation.

3. Sun Damage and Freckles

Most often seen in Fitzpatrick types 1 and 2, these are linked to cumulative UV exposure.  These respond well to a mixture of topical treatment and chemical peels.

Many of my Fitzpatrick 4 to 6 patients are understandably worried about:

The first thing I often do is remove products that may be irritating or disrupting the skin barrier.  A compromised barrier = more inflammation = worsening pigmentation.  This is one of the most common reasons patients’ pigmentation hasn’t improved before seeing me.

A break from routine shouldn’t mean a break from good skin habits—especially when you’re dealing with more sun, salt, heat, and travel-related stress. Whether you’re off on a beach holiday or sightseeing with kids, these are some of the most common skincare mistakes I see people make (and what to do instead). Following these simple steps should keep things in check and avoid skincare conditions like acne, rosacea and melasma/ pigmentation getting worse.

1. Skipping Vitamin C in the Morning

Many people leave vitamin C out of their holiday routine—but this is when your skin needs it most. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps protect against free radical damage caused by sun exposure and pollution. It also helps prevent pigmentation and works with your sunscreen to give more complete protection.

What to do instead: Even if it’s not part of your usual routine, use a stable vitamin C serum under sunscreen each morning on holiday. My current fave is VI derm's Vitamin C brightening concentrate which contains Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate. This is more stable and less irritating than ascorbic acid, whilst still enhancing collagen production and antioxidant protection to help reduce UV damage and prevent further pigmentation.

Sunscreen is essential—but it shouldn’t be your only line of defence. Many people forget that physical protection matters just as much.

Our goal is to enhance your natural beauty, not alter it unnecessarily. If we are concerned about possible Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), or body dysmorphia then we are likely to advice you to seek help and support for your mental health before seeking any aesthetic treatments as cosmetic procedures can sometimes worsen an individual's mental health if they are suffering with BDD. For certain treatments like fillers or anti-wrinkle injections, it might be too soon for you to undergo the procedure safely. We typically recommend against anti-wrinkle treatments at intervals shorter than three months to ensure your safety and optimal results.

Other reason we delay treatments are if you have upcoming travel plans too soon post treatment (see our blog on travelling post injectable treatments for guidance on how much time to leave between having a treatment and planning a flight) or you have a major social event coming up (particularly true for dermal filler treatment where bruising and swelling is more common especially with lip filler treatment). We normally advice 2 weeks to allow the filler to integrate and any bruising/ swelling to settle.

3. Your expectations are unrealistic

Every cosmetic procedure, whether surgical or non-surgical, has its limitations. If we believe that your desired outcome is unrealistic or unattainable with our treatments, we will honestly communicate this to you. Our aim is to manage your expectations and provide guidance on more suitable options. For instance, if we feel that a surgical approach might better achieve your goals, we'll guide you in that direction.

4. Your previous treatments need correction or adjustment

We believe in delivering aesthetic treatments that not only enhance your natural beauty but also prioritise your safety and well-being. If you've had treatments elsewhere and are unsatisfied with the results, it's essential to assess the situation carefully. Will a chemical peel make my face look red and feel very sore?

Superficial chemical peels are a popular choice for those seeking a non-invasive way to rejuvenate their skin. However, many people are hesitant to try these treatments because they fear they will leave their face too red and sore. In this blog post, we wi ll explain why a superficial peel won't make your face too red and sore.

First, it's important to understand what a superficial peel is and how it works.

A superficial peel is a type of chemical peel that uses a mild acid, such as alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) or beta-hydroxy acid (BHA), to exfoliate the outermost layer of the skin. These peels are typically very gentle and can be performed in a spa or clinic setting without the need for anaesthesia.

How it works:

The reason why a superficial peel won't leave your face too red and sore is that it only affects the outermost layer of the skin, known as the stratum corneum. - If you have sensitive or very dry skin then some peels are not appropriate for your skin.

This is a really common question we get asked. Patients will often only expect isolated treatment in the smiles lines (also known as nasolabial folds). This is a friendly reminder to PLAN AHEAD if you are wanting to have treatments before your travels this summer (or any time of the year for that matter)!

Generally speaking, schedule any injectable treatments at least 2 WEEKS before you fly.

Read on to find out more specific advice.

ANTI-WRINKLE TREATMENT

Current literature advises it is okay to fly 24-48 HOURS after treatment. HOWEVER, it takes two weeks to see the full benefit of this treatment. So if you want to look your best for your break, schedule your treatment at least 2 weeks before your treatment.

Also take into account, especially if it is your first time having treatment, you don’t want to risk only becoming aware of a complication whilst you are away.

Make sure you are available for the free follow up appointment with us at 2 weeks for complementary tops up and tweakments if required. We offer virtual reviews where appropriate but need you to physically come in for any top ups if needed.

PROFHILO

Wait at least 2 DAYS before traveling to allow any swelling or bruising to subside and reduce the risk of infection.

CHEMICAL PEEL

We recommend waiting at least 1-2 WEEKS (depending on the depth of the peel) after receiving a chemical peel before traveling. This is to allow the skin to fully heal and to avoid exposing the skin to the sun too soon after procedure, which can cause damage and prolong the healing process.

PRESCRIPTION GRADE SKINCARE

If you have recently been prescribed skincare products containing tretinoin or hydroquinone (e.g. Obagi Nu term range), don't start using it 1 WEEK before high UV exposure (sunny beach holidays). Many of these skincare products can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. You need to allow the skin to adjust to any new skincare ingredients in your normal environment first.

By planning ahead and giving yourself enough time for recovery, you can enjoy your travels with confidence and look your best!

When should you start thinking about Collagen Banking?

Collagen banking is the idea that you can increase your collagen production early in life to help slow down the ageing process later on.

Here's why your 30s is a good time start these treatments...

We are losing 1% of collagen per year from age 25.

And the rate of collagen production also slows down with age, giving rise to dull, wrinkled and loose skin. In the first five years of menopause, women can lose as much as 30% of their collagen.

Later this slows down to around 2% per year.
